What this calculator does

Calculates 3D Printing FDM Extrusion Flow Rate & Line Width Sizer using the formula verified against the cited source.

What your result means

An estimate from the inputs you enter, within the scope stated below — not advice.

Formula

Rounded-bead area ≈ h(w − h) + πh²/4 (w ≥ h); volumetric flow Q = area × print speed (mm³/s); rectangular model Q = w × h × speed

The step-by-step working for your own numbers appears with the result above and in the PDF report.

Frequently asked questions

Symbols and assumptions

Inputs
The values entered in the fields above
  • • Rectangular-bead approximation Q≈width×layer height×print speed. For a rounded-rectangle bead with width w≥h, area≈h(w−h)+πh²/4, so Q=area×speed, in mm³/s for mm and mm/s.

Sources and review

  • • State the bead geometry; rectangular and rounded models give different flow. Select the slicer’s actual model and cap flow by tested hotend/material capability. Line width is an input here; solving width from a specified flow requires that flow and an explicit geometry model. Filament linear feed also needs filament diameter.

Important limitation

This is an educational estimate based only on the values and formula shown. Verify current rates, rules, units, and professional standards before relying on the result. It is not personalized financial or investment advice.
