What this calculator does
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) collects 12% of your basic pay plus DA every month, and your employer adds 12% too. Of the employer's 12%, 8.33% (on pay up to ₹15,000) goes to the pension scheme (EPS); the rest goes to your EPF. This calculator grows the EPF balance at the declared rate until retirement.
What your result means
Salary rises make later contributions bigger, and compounding makes the last decade add the most. Withdrawing early breaks this compounding.
Formula
1. Monthly contributions and yearly interest
Symbols
- B
- Monthly basic + DA (₹)
- r
- Annual EPF rate (decimal)
Why this formula works
EPFO calculates interest each month on the running balance and adds it to the account once a year.
Unit check
₹ = ₹ × (no unit). ✓
Worked example
B = ₹30,000: employee ₹3,600, EPS ₹1,250, employer EPF ₹2,350 a month.
Common mistakes
Counting the full employer 12% as EPF — part of it goes to EPS. Compounding interest monthly instead of crediting yearly.
Working for your numbers
- Employee = 12% × ₹30,000 = ₹3,600 a month
- EPS = 8.33% × ₹15,000 = ₹1,250
- Employer EPF = ₹3,600 − ₹1,250 = ₹2,351
- After 30 years at 8.25%: ₹1,60,92,843
Frequently asked questions
Is the EPF rate fixed?
No. EPFO declares the rate each year. 8.25% is the latest declared rate used here; change the field to try others.
Is EPF interest tax-free?
Mostly. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if the employer does not contribute) is taxable. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free.
Where is my EPS pension?
EPS gives a monthly pension from 58 based on a formula; it is not part of this balance.
Does this calculator tell me what to do?
No. It is an educational estimate using published rules. It does not know your full situation. For a personal decision, speak to a qualified tax professional or a SEBI-registered investment adviser.
