What this calculator does
The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) is for people aged 60 or above (55 for some retirees). You deposit once and receive interest every quarter for 5 years, then get the deposit back. The rate is fixed for the whole term.
What your result means
SCSS is built for regular income, not growth. Because interest is paid out rather than reinvested, the total interest is simple interest on the deposit.
Formula
1. SCSS quarterly interest
Symbols
- Q
- Interest paid each quarter (₹)
- P
- Deposit (₹)
- r
- Annual rate (decimal)
Why this formula works
The annual rate is split into four equal quarterly payments, with no compounding.
Unit check
₹ = ₹ × (no unit). ✓
Worked example
P = ₹15,00,000, r = 8.2%: Q = ₹30,750.
Common mistakes
Compounding the interest — SCSS pays it out. Assuming the deposit grows.
Working for your numbers
- Q = ₹15,00,000 × 8.2% ÷ 4 = ₹30,750
- Yearly = ₹30,750 × 4 = ₹1,23,000
- 5 years = ₹30,750 × 20 = ₹6,15,000
Frequently asked questions
