What this calculator does
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings scheme for a girl child. You deposit for 15 years; the account matures 21 years after opening. This calculator grows the balance at the official rate, compounded once a year.
What your result means
The last six years add interest without any new deposits, which is why the balance keeps rising after year 15. Opening the account early gives the money more time to grow.
Formula
1. SSY maturity value
Symbols
- M
- Maturity value at 21 years (₹)
- D
- Yearly deposit (₹)
- r
- Annual interest rate (decimal)
Why this formula works
The first part is 15 yearly deposits made at the start of each year. The (1 + r)⁶ term grows that balance for the remaining six years without deposits.
Unit check
₹ = ₹ × (no unit). ✓
Worked example
D = ₹1,00,000, r = 8.2%: M ≈ ₹47,88,079.
Common mistakes
Counting 21 years of deposits instead of 15. Forgetting the six years of growth with no deposits.
Working for your numbers
- 15 deposits: ₹1,00,000 × 29.8399 = ₹29,83,993
- Six more years: × (1 + 0.0820)⁶ = × 1.6046
- M = ₹47,88,079
- Interest = ₹47,88,079 − ₹15,00,000 = ₹32,88,079
Frequently asked questions
Is the 8.2% rate fixed for my whole SSY term?
The government reviews small savings rates every quarter. 8.2% is the rate notified for the October–December 2026 quarter. You can change the rate field to see how a different future rate would change the result.
Can money be taken out before 21 years?
Up to 50% of the balance can be withdrawn for the girl's education after she turns 18. The account can also be closed at marriage after 18.
Is SSY tax-free?
Under current rules deposits qualify under Section 80C in the old regime, and interest and maturity are tax-free.
Does this calculator tell me whether to invest?
No. It is an educational projection using the official rate and standard scheme rules. It does not consider your goals, taxes or other options. For a personal decision, speak to a SEBI-registered investment adviser.
